We (a group from New Zealand tertiary institutions) are developing open source software for the management and marking of assignments, called Lightwork.

In brief, Lightwork is an application that is installed on the teacher’s PC. It connects to the institution’s Moodle installation and works together with the assignment module and the Gradebook. The learners still submit their assignment work to Moodle and receive their marks and feedback from Moodle. What Lightwork focuses on is supporting the teacher with the marking tasks.
