It's just been brought to my attention by a student in my class that one of my lessons that contains an essay won't save the essay so I can't grade them, nor know that the student completed the lesson. I got the same result with my fake student account but was able to grab a screenshot of the error message that flashed on my screen for a moment before it continued to my final branch table at the end of the lesson.
