Is it possible to use Moodle for formative assessment for a K12 system? Currently we us a program called ThinkGate and it is very expensive. Our system would like to be able to create test and have students take them on a bubble sheet and then scan the answers into a the system and be able to pull data from a database. Can moodle do this?

No. It only offers quizzes that users answer in their web browser.

Presumably the scanning needs special hardware? I wonder if there any any open-source software to drive it. You can import grades from a spreadsheet to the Moodle gradebook.

Roman,

I have heard of one school district in Arizona that was using the Quiz module to build all their assessments but I don't believe that they were using scanned bubble sheets.  I think they were actually having their students take the tests online.

cool

Tim's reply is overly modest. Quiz is a very powerful tool, and it may very well be able to help you with formative assessment.

But, you would have to surrender the Scantron and its bubble sheets.

Quiz can certainly give you the ability to ask students what they've learned and feedback to instructors both individual and group responses, thus allowing the instructor to decide what to teach next (etc).

You can download the results of a quiz in Excel format, which means you can put it in any kind of database format you like.

Actually, the Open University has a demo here.

"iCMA03 An adaptive: interactive style formative assessment (constructed in Moodle using OpenMark questions)"

I just took the 4 question quiz and got 2 right (out of total ignorance). A harmless registration with the OU is required.

Here's more information about this particular quiz. Note Moodle's capabilities.

The short iCMA includes interactive examples of OpenMark questions currently used in various Open University courses.

For the technically minded the questions in this demonstration have been built into a Moodle Quiz within the normal Moodle editing interface but all the questions are actually served by the OpenMark question engine. Within this model the Moodle Quiz handles all the administrative tasks while OpenMark handles all question specific interactions.

Moodle Quiz
  • sequences the questions
  • keeps track of the user's position
  • stores scores
  • stores response information
  • provides scores to the Gradebook
  • enables the replay of interactions in review mode
  • enables analysis of responses
while the OpenMark question engine
  • creates the questions
  • handles the responses
  • provides the feedback
  • determines the scores
