In a sense, for the long term future of Moodle, it does not really matter whether any work is done on Lesson in Moodle 2.0.
The main focus of Moodle 2.0 is a lot of internal clean-up of how Moodle works. That is important, and that is what the core developers will be focussing on.
Now, some other things are happening too, but only when other people have time. And the availability of other people's time tends to be very uneven. Nothing will happen for a long time, then suddenly a lot will. That is basically what Helen's answer is.
Having got the core sorted out, the hope is that in Moodle 2.1, 2.2, ... more people will be able to give more attention to the various activities and other Moodle plugins.
That may not be what fans of the Lesson, and other less common modules want to hear, but that is how I see it. And the people who know the lesson code may get some time before the Moodle 2.0 release.

Is the Lesson activity a dead duck?
