Yesterday I added an entry page to a Quizport and this resulted in my students not being able to resume their Quizports where they had left off but instead only being given the option, at the entry page, to "Start New Quiz Attempt". I thought this might be because I added the entry page after they had started the Quizport but I have just been testing this and setting Show Entry Page to Yes definitely causes this problem on my Quizports. Am I missing something? I have left this setting on in an unused course if you would like to have a look:
Because these students tried several times to get to where they wanted to be in the Quizports and then gave up, they now have several new abandoned attempts in their results. So even when I disable the entry page they are made to start at the beginning. Is there a way of removing the unwanted attempts?
Thanks so much in advance.
thanks for letting me access your QuizPort.
I checked that "Allow resume" is set to yes for the QuizPort, and it was, so that seems OK.
However, the conditions look odd to me (see screenshot). For example the post-conditions on the first quiz are:
- >=100%: Same quiz
- Next quiz
Probably you intended the opposite, something like the following:
- >=100%: Next quiz
- Same quiz
Please change the conditions and then confirm whether or not the QuizPort behaves according to your expectations. If not, I will come and have another look.
> Is there a way of removing the unwanted attempts?
It is supposed to be possible to remove attempts from the QuizPorts index page, but on your site, selecting attempts and then choosing "Delete" and "Go" has no effect. The server seems to make no effort to delete anything; it just redisplays the page.
As a result, it seems to be impossible to delete attempts on your at the moment
Thanks for checking my Quizports.
I see that the post-conditions are wrongly set on that Quizport - thanks for pointing that out. But I am fairly sure that is not what was causing the problem as the problem occurred in this Quizport:
where the conditions are set normally.
From your second comment about not being able to delete attempts on my server it seems my server is behaving strangely with Quizports. Maybe this is what is causing the strange behaviour when I add an entry page too? What can I do about that?
I realised I was making life difficult for you with the previous link I sent as it does not have the entry page showing.
I adjusted the post-conditions on the other Quizport:
and re-tested. The students are still forced to start a new attempt when "Show Entry Page" is set to "Yes".
I can gt round this by making the first page of the Quizport an html page with the information I wanted on the Entry page, but still it would be nice to see this functioning as it should.
Thanks so much.
thanks for tidying things up. In the meantime, I had a look at the delete functions and realized they need a bit of optimization for large courses. I developed the delete functions on small courses where the SQL doesn't have to be very efficient, but having just tried them on a live site with thousands of users and hundreds of QuizPorts I see there is need to make the SQL a bit cleverer.
I am still fixing that up, but it shoud be finished today or tomorrow, at which time I will put it into the next version of QuizPort.
Also, I am currently fine tuning the functionality of the stop (=give up) button and the popup windows, and I think this will effect the behavior of a QuizPort when students stop half way through and try to resume later.
Thanks for pointing out the issue with the Entry page apparently preventing the resumption of a QuizPort. I will come and have a look at the QuizPort you kindly set up later on.
out for now
the trick is to set the Entry page options to display the list of previous attempts (see attached screenshot).
On the list of attempts, any that are can be resumed have a little "Resume" button next to them. This gives the students the choice of either resuming a previous attempts or starting a new attempt.
I know, this is not what you want. You don't want the student to have a choice. You want them to resume automagically. Hmmm, please let me think about that a little more ....
Thanks very much for your explanations.
Until I added the Entry Page the large Quizport functioned beautifully, automatically starting the students where they left off, which for my students is just perfect. And choosing which previous attempt to resume was never an issue because there was always only one attempt.
As my Quizports are quite long (although I have learnt my lesson and won't be making them so long in the future) my students will normally give up and resume another day, so I will just go back to my old way until further notice.
Thanks so much for looking into this.
your dilemma has got me thinking about the "allow resume" setting.
At the moment, it has just two setting, "No" and "Yes", but I think it needs three settings: "No", "Yes - Forced", "Yes - Optional"
Currently, if there is no Entry page then this setting acts like "Yes - forced". However, as you have discovered, when there is an Entry page it acts like "Yes - optional".
This is deliberate and reflects the way I thought QuizPort should behave when I originally wrote the code. However, I can now see that there are good reasons for a teacher to want to force the resumption of the QuizPort unit from the previous quiz.
I will experiment with the setting later this week and update the download zip file in due course.
thanks once again for giving me access to your enchanting online course
I will look forward to the developments.
Thanks so much for your comment on my course. It was just the boost I needed today.
thanks for waiting. I have added a new value of "Force" to the "Allow resume" setting for quizzes and units.
Here is a snippet from the QuizPort help file which explains this setting:
This setting specifies whether or not students can resume an attempt.
Attempts cannot be resumed.
Students will be given the choice to either resume any previous attempts that are still in progress, or start a new attempt.
If there is a previous attempt that is still in progress, students will be forced to resume that attempt. Otherwise, they can start a new attempt.
This functionality is available in the latest version of QuizPort:
all the best
You never forget do you?
I think this greatly improves the functionality of Quizport in terms of Unit Attempts.
Thanks so much!
I just got the latest Quizport. I like the new menu on the Edit Quizzes Page - it's much clearer!
how are you doing?
Earlier in this thread you asked ...
> Is there a way of removing the unwanted attempts?
When you asked this I think you particularly had in mind the long list of attempts on the entry page that a teacher gets if they have been testing a lot during development of a QuizPort.
Of course we can hide the list altogether now with using the "Entry page options" for the QuizPort, but I thought you would like to know that I have just a "select and delete" to the entry page. As a result, you should now be able to select and delete your attempts from the list that appears on the QuizPort entry page.
Since we had problems deleting attempts on your site earlier, I would be very interested to know if this new functionality works for you.
Thanks very much for following up on this point. I updated Quizport 8 days ago and did try out the "delete attempts" option but it caused the computer to freeze. I was having problems with viruses at the time so wasn't sure if it was Quizport or viruses causing the problem. I am now abroad and just tried from here and had similar results. I also got a "a script on this page is causing Internet Explorer to run slowly.........." message.
I am unclear whether you have modified this functionality in the last few days as you say "I have just added a select and delete option........". Please advise if this is the case and I will re-update Quizport and try again.
QuizPort was modified literally a few minutes before my post, so I do not think you have a recent enough version of QuizPort.
In fact, I have just checked your version numbers. You have 2008033141 but you need at least 2008033143 (The last two digits are the most important)
Please arrange for an upgrade when you can - or you may like to wait a couple more days until I can fix the reports to show the "Unit attempt" report as the default.
You asked me to let you know if the new "select and delete" function for quiz attempts works on my server, and I still haven't done so.
My problem is that every time I update Quizport I have to ask my host to do it. They are wonderful, but still, I feel like a bit of a nuisance.
You mentioned that you are hoping to facilitate Rhubarb on Quizport soon. Would it be a problem if I waited for that before updating or is it important that you know about the "select and delete" function soon?
no need to hurry feel pressured, the functionality is there for you to have a look at when you can.
You will be pleased to know that a preliminary version (i.e. hasn't been tested "in the field" much) of the Rhubarb (html) output format is included in the latest QuizPort download.
I hope to add Sequitur over the weekend and then I can think about JMemori and JMatch-intro. Quandary is waiting in the wings too.
I have an interesting meeting his weekend with an iPhone development company from Tokyo. Maybe we can make a iPhone app for QuizPort to deliver all your content on phones and game-boxes . Lots to look forward to !!
I am so excited about JMemori and JMatch-intro. I have had to set up an elaborate and rather clumsy arrangement for them in the Hotpot module and even so they don't score so it would be wonderful to convert the course to a Quizport!
Thanks so much.
I did some work on JMatch-intro today. I was working with a the example files from Michael Rottmeier's site, but I think there were made with HP5, because there are some significant differences from HP6 JMatch that I was not expecting.
So I wold like to ask you for one of your JMatch-intro files. Please send it to me directly or attach it to your next post to this forum. I would also be grateful if you could confirm that it was made with HP6 using the templates downloaded from Michael's site.
Unfortunately, the downloads from Michael's university site are not working at the moment, so I couldn't download them and make my own files to test on
thanks in advance
How exciting! I have sent the files you asked for via email.
