Want to add BBC news syndication to front page

This may sound slightly odd, but I want to add the BBC News syndication to my frontpage. How can I do this? I can probably make a stab, but I really want to get it correct.
Pretend I am an wally in your answer, what I know about PHP you could write on a very small postcard - well okay, slight hyperbole, I can do the usual hello world and e-mail myself a return from a form so I am not a complete wally.
Its taken the BBC 9 months to approve my application, so I really want to get it on there!
Ta in advance!
Cheers
Jools

Re: Want to add BBC news syndication to front page

Julian, I have had GREAT success with the RSSBLOCK2 that has been discussed at http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=10245

I have attached the files from a site that is working.  With this block you can add multiple RSS streams AND customize it per course.  Unfortunately, right now only the ADMIN can make the changes (from the Administration --> Configuration --> Blocks --> Syndicated Feeds page).

Let us know if there is anything we can do to help.

Re: Want to add BBC news syndication to front page

Dear Marc Dastous, Derek Morrison, Jon Bolton

I have not been able to get the RSSFEED2 to work. I unzipped Marc's .zip file and

1) put the language file in the language folder. No problem.
2) I moved the rssfeed2 folder to the blocks folder of my Moodle for Windows (praise it) but noticed that inside it there was another folder called "blocks."  None of the other blocks inside moodle/blocks have a blocks folder *inside* them so I presumed that this was a simple mistake in the heirarchy. I removed the "blocks" folder from *inside* rssfeed2 and put its contents directly inside the rssfeed2 folder inside the blocks folder of moodle.
3) When I went to admin, I was told "could not find rssfeed2.php"  and I saw that there was indeed no file called rssfeed2.php but only rssfeed.php (the 2 is missing). I added the "2" to the end of the file name.
4) Was then told "Block rssfeed2: CourseBlock_rssfeed2 not implemented"

I will have a go with the "plus" version on the original thread.

Thanks
Tim

Hi Timothy,
you moved the files at the right folders but you have to rename the folder rssfeed2 to rssfeed and let the files names as they were.

Have a good BBC view,

Bernard

Tim et al.;

My sincerest apologies blush.  The heirarchy was indeed botched!!  I have corrected mistake and posted the new .zip file!  I created the first one at the end of a very long day with my middle schoolers black eye

Hi Marc,

I'm trying to use the RSSFeed posted above, but whenever I try to add a feed on the blocks configuration panel I get:

A required parameter (sesskey) was missing

Any Ideas? (I'm running 1.4.2+, I'm assuming this block has already been updated for the security features of 1.4.2+ that Martin mentions here

The original posting contains an incorrect source for the BBC feed. The correct source for the BBC feed is at:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/rss/newsonline_world_edition/front_page/rss091.xml

It's working fine with the modifications that I referenced above. You can see a working BBC feed at:

Fantastic, splendid, it works brilliantly .....
But.....
For some reason the drop down box is massive. Any idea as to how I can change its size so its nice and neat like on your page?
The rest of my site is now pushed over to one side - looks really silly.
Thanks for your help so far.

Okay solved the problem by only having one feed.
Shame as I quite wanted the BBC Sport and BBC News!
Probably have to wait for version 1.5 to be stable

Glad to hear you had some luck finally smile I don't know what's causing your display problems...

I think 1.5 is the answer really smile Here's my settings from the Syndicated Feeds:

5 - maximum number of items to be displayed?
1 - hours before checking for updates?

BBC News

Re: Want to add BBC news syndication to front page

Hi

I have been following instructions here and have manged to get an RSS feed working for BBC news, although the block heading says ((blockname)) instead of "syndicated feeds" or whatever it should say. I copied the php file to lang/en but this made no difference. I then deleted the block and let it try to re-install but now I get

Block rssfeed tables could NOT be set up successfully!

Also before this happened when I tried to add a feed from a Yahoo group that I run, I get an error message "could not open feed called http://rss.groups.yahoo.com/group/merchandise_planning/rss"

this works fine in my My Yahoo page.

Any ideas?

Regards

John

RSS feeds in my courses:

I'm running 1.4.3
I installed correctly the rssfeed.zip block
got into admin, received a kind confirmation from moodle: installed satisfactory
then I got into blocks configuration, and got into the "syndicated feeds" admin. I set a couple of feeds for one course, submitted.... and received an error page stating that "A required parameter (sesskey) was missing".
I did everything while logged as admin.
What can be wrong? I very need the RSS display for some of my courses right asap...
any good idea? I'm sure it must be something silly, but I can't discover it...
thanx in advance,

daniEl

Re: RSS feeds in my courses:

Did you enable it under forums and configuration?

Do these two things, then see if it works:

  1. admin-->modules--->click on the setting for forums--->at the bottom of that page it says forum_enablerssfeeds--->indicate yes and click on "Save Changes".
  2. admin--->variables--->next to the last thing all the way down to the bottom page its says, enablerssfeeds--->indicate yes and click on "Save Changes".

I hope this helps you.  Let me know.  smile
Blessings,

SOLUTION! in 1.4.3 Re: RSS feeds in my courses:

Shalom Rev. Lady Athena,
first of all, thanx so much for your suggestions. anyway, your instructions were good to enable my own forums to produce rss feeds.
what i was looking for was, instead, to display rss feeds from other sites into my courses' pages.
FINALLY, THE SOLUTION WORKED, and I state it here to make it helpful for others in the same situation.

I installed the rssfeeds.zip block as explained in
http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=13314
(the file is
http://moodle.org/file.php/5/moddata/forum/32/64604/rssfeed.zip)

and modified one line of code in the config.php of the block as explained in
http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=15337#74585.

AND NOW IT'S WORKING GREAT IN MY 1.4.3 MOODLE: I HAVE RSS FEEDS IMPORTED FROM ALL KINDS OF SITES IN EVERY COURSE I WANT, MANAGED AS AN OTHER SINGLE BLOCK.

now a question, does anybody know how to import also atom feeds to our courses?

GOOD LUCK!,

daniEl

thanx, julian, i hope others will take adventage of this too
but, you know: if you aren't a php expert (and i'm not), there are not obvious solutions being born from "code associations". anyway, if you are yet an ideas developer, there are are solutions born from associate ideas smile))))))
here we are. you need all the main roles covered to have a community play.
thanx a lot,

Re: Want to add BBC news syndication to front page

Julian, rather than using the javascript code on your front page, it would be MUCH easier to use the RSS syndication as Marc says.

Go to the section of BBC News with the headlines you are interested in (eg World). Click on the link that says 'RSS version' in the red services strip at the bottom of the page.

You then need to follow the instructions in the ReadMe file in order to add the XML feed to your RSS list.

There is a large selection of BBC News pages available for syndication - News Front Page; World; UK; England; Northern Ireland; Scotland; Wales; Business; Politics; Health; Education; Science/Nature; Technology; Entertainment; Have Your Say; Magazine; Week At a Glance; and Programmes.

I'm happy to help if you need assistance setting it up. Give me a shout.

Cheers
Jon

Re: Want to add BBC news syndication to front page

Julian

I don't know if its possible to put it in a block, but I have got it to work in a label by suitably modifying the standard markup that Google provides to search its normal site.

This is my modified markup:

<!-- Search Google Scholar--><center><form action="http://www.scholar.google.com/scholar" method="get"><input type="hidden" name="ie" /> <input type="hidden" name="oe" /> <table bgcolor="#ffffff"><tbody><tr><td><a href="http://www.scholar.google.com/"><img alt="Google" src="http://www.scholar.google.com/images/scholar_logo.gif" align="absMiddle" border="0" /></a> <input maxlength="255" size="25" name="q" /> <input type="submit" name="btnG" /> </td></tr></tbody></table></form></center><!-- Search Google Scholar-->

Just copy and paste this into the HTML Editor (in HTML mode) of a label and hey presto!

I tried this on my site and it worked a treat - but you might want to reduce the size of the image - it's a bit big.

Does anyone know if Google is likely to object to us using it like this?

Gavin,
Cheers that works an absolute treat!
I am sure that Google won't mind, although I will just drop them a line.
I would have thought that they would be dead chuffed that someone had sorted it!

I'd not come across Scholar before - thanks for that Martin!

I think I'll include it in my A-Level pages - its a bit advanced to be relevant for the lower school kids.

It will certainly help on my own Masters' course! ;o)
