Using an external database and implementing a password change option I get the following message"
You cannot proceed without changing your password, however there is no available page for changing it. Please contact your Moodle Administrator.
Clicking the docs link provides:
error/auth/nopasswordchangeforced (and searching the forums doesn't yield anything for this either)
When I click the continue button, the logon has taken place normally
When I change the admin authorization settings to indicate the page where users can change passwords it goes there whenever a (new) user tries to log on.
The error message does not appear to be generated by the moodle/auth/db/auth.php code.

Having re-tested the problem with a brand new user everything is behaving as it ought to now.
Possibly I did something bad like tried to change my password at the external site while logged on to moodle.
