Thank you. That's a great help. But unfortunately I'm still having some problems.

Logged in as an admin I set up new grades for KS3 ranging from a 4a to a 7c. I also set up a grade set for a GCSE class with grades from A* to U.

I then set up an assignment for the GCSE group and chose the GCSE ICT grade for that on the set up page. When the students handed in their work I marked it giving grades from A* to C. However, when they logged in, they all saw a U grade - it shows correctly for me as an admin.

I also set up an assignment for KS3 and applied the KS3 grade scale that I had set up i.e. 4a to 7c. I did a test submission from a test student account. Logged back in as me and graded it as a 4c. I logged back out and logged in as test student, and it appeared as a U grade on that account.

Have I missed a completely obvious step out or can anyone spot what has gone wrong?
