The spell check icon does not appear in our html editor even though it has not been hidden in the admin settings...any help appreciated?

Do you have aspell uploaded?You don't get a spell checker automatically; it has to be installed.

If you have admin rights and you have access to the server then I believe there are some instructions in the docs if you search "configure aspell". It will depend on how your Moodle's set up - I haven't got aspell so I'm sorry I can't be of more help.
