Master course with multiple child courses?

We are trying to create a single course that can be accessed by multiple other courses, but still keep the grades on the separate courses.

Basically we have a number of professors that will be teaching their own course, but utilizing a common format/material that may change throughout the semester. We would like each professor to be able to have their own gradebook and add their own content should they choose to their own course, but still have the master course materiasl available directly in each separate course.

We have played with metacourses, but it seemed to share the enrollments more than the materials. We also considered a single course with groups, but we would rather not have a shared gradebook for cumbersome reasons.

Any suggestions? Is one of the above options good and we are just inept?

Doesn't answer your query but - you don't have to have a "shared" gradebook - if you put the teachers into each group with their own classes and set the course and assignments to separate groups and ensure they cannot see all groups only their own then they will each have, technically, their own gradebook within the course.

I think you are on the right track just some details need to be worked out.

In order to keep grading for each course separate, all graded activities must be in the individual courses not the metacourse. Metacourse should have only the shared materials.

Students will be visiting either their individual course or the shared (meta) course, depending what they want.

You might have thought that materials from metacourse show magically in other courses. That is not the case. However, it is possible to place in the individual courses direct links to the materials in the metacourse to make things a tad simpler for students. I just advise to do that in a separate topic and label clearly that these are links to the shared course, so students don't get a shock that they are suddenly in a different course.
