I'm doing some research on moodle forums and one of the problems that asynchronous discussion research literature pointed out is the untimely death of a thread. Part of the cited reason is that participants tend to respond only to newer posts and ignore older posts, regardless of the value of their content.
In relation, some time ago there was a third party block called "unanswered discussions" which imho intends to resolve this problem. But that solution never was popular, and in my experience people seem to ignore the block altogether as against the new posts that appear in the activity block.
Perhaps a tag cloud of initial discussions would be of more help to sustain important older threads. The tag could just link to the 1st post, and anyone who responds can add to the tags created by the 1st poster. The ingredients seems to be all there but is this possible now?
Is there any way to tag initial posts, and have them displayed in a tag cloud block?
