I'm a high school math teacher using our school's Moodle setup. Trying to tackle the 'quiz' module using 'calculation' type questions. TWO very basic questions--

(1) MediaWiki TeX FAQ seems to take care of how to write the questions so they show up properly in the 'question' area, BUT what do i need to ask/tell our Moodle Administrator to download/add/activate so I can use it in our Moodle setup?

(2) How do I write formula to generate problems like " 3n + 6x - ( 2x + 5n ) ". No problem getting that question to appear [ {a}n + {b}x - ( {c}x + {d}n) ], and i can get it to generate values for the coefficients, BUT the 'formula' will not let me use the 'x' and 'n' to come up with the proper answer like " - 2n + 4x " [ ({a} - {d}) * n + ({b} - {c}) * x ] rather than " 2n " (or "2x"). It seems that only one 'unit' (ie- 'n' or 'x' ) can be used and not keep the two separate.

Unfortunately, our Moodle Administrator can't answer a question like this. If the only way to get simple questions like this going is to use 'short answer' type, then why bother going on line.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Give me something to read, some place to search -- even help with the language to ask the proper questions. Thanks . . .

Regarding your formula issue: I think you need STACK installed to overcome this problem. If I understand you correctly then, for example, you want your students to simplify $$3n + 6x - (2x + 5n)$$ ?

Well, even the answer a student could give here could be $$4x - 2n$$, or $$-2n + 4x$$. These kind of commutative/associative problems can be a bind in trying to automatically mark more advanced math/algebra questions on-line.

To overcome that kind of problem you need a computer algebra system (CAS) and that is where STACK comes in. It can also generate random variables for coefficients - which was your other requirement.
