How long is "recent activity" recent?

I ask this question because the recent activity block on my page is huge. I need to be able to control the size. I could probably hack the block but I would rather not for fear that I would end up having to reinstall it.

After upgrade to 1.8.3 recent activity on my website is big. It shows post from last month.

Is this a bug?

I remember you need to change the recent period parameter in course/recent.php
