The school I am at is about to start using Moodle, what I would like to know is:
1. Is there any features that are enabled in LAMS, that can't be carried out in Moodle?
If that is the case, then I will push out technology support teacher to include the LAMS install at the same time as the Moodle install.
2. Does Moodle provide for learning paths, that are activated by prior learning?
From what I can see in the later versions it does, but I want to be sure.
3. Nothing to do with LAMS, but a question from an Art teacher at my school. How customisable is the skin of Moodle for individual teachers or courses?
you can use LAMS as an integration in Moodle (activity or course format). If you do this, Moodle calls the LAMS system and gives the students access o the LAMS unit. No LAMS units are disabled. On the other way LAMS can integrate several, but not all, Moodle activities in a LAMS process (see LAMS documentation about this).
Learning paths are part of Moodle 2.0. In Moodle 1.9 you can combine different lessons to a learning path or protect quizzes and lessons by password only given by special results in quizzes. With additional tool 'conditional activities' you can add learning paths to Moodle in actual version 1.9. But you shouldn't compare the learning paths in Moodle with the learning paths in LAMS. LAMS has a more advanced model of learning paths based on Learning Design concepts.
You should have a look at the theme forum here or at the theme database to see some examples. With version 2.0 there will be much more options to design it. Theme design is done by CSS in the system http://docs.moodle.org (search for theme). You can add a theme in course settings only to one course, but the theming is done in the programm code area of he system and not via administrative interface. For developing themes art teachers can use local Moodle systems and copy the code to the productive Moodle system. Can your teacher customize the LAMS interface today?
That is what I thought, they are complementary, rather than one replacing the other. I aren't using LAMS at the current school but have previously and was advocating for their use. Some people were saying that Moddle made LAMS redundant.
As for the Art teacher he is good at Multimedia and design software, his immediate reaction to Moodle, was can you skin it individually like Blogger.
