If I update moodle to the most current version, I will lose the calculated columns currently in gradebooks.
The calculated columns are currently working well, but the end of the grading period is next week, and if the formulas disappear, it will be ugly.
Is there a way to upgrade w/o having to reinstall the calculated columns addin?
I would typically back up my moodle directory, back up the database, copy the new unzipped moodle directory over the old, hit the admin page, click next a few times and call it done.
The files that you want not to be overwritten are course/grade.php and course/grades.php. Perhaps you could write-protect them before unzipping the new code. Or move them somehwere else and move them back in after unzipping the new code.

I made the update and restored the two files.
This was perfect, and the formulas are still there for the teachers.
