Is there a way to select a course category on the course categories page and then assign roles? There isn't any check boxes and the assign roles link on top left on the course category page so is it possible to get the check boxes to select the categories and click on the assign roles or we have to click on the category and then select all the courses and then assign roles because there is a lot of categories and a lot of courses in each of those categories so it takes a while to set up the courses for a student?

You could create a metacourse style enrollment

Like is shown in scenario 2/scenario 4. The "real" course is the category (Year 3 Student) and then all of the courses that a year 3 student would take are metacourses.

It seems that you can assign a student the role in the single real course and the student is automatically assigned that role in the other courses.

Once you enter the category you should have an assign roles link in the top right of your browser. This will let you assign roles to the category; which will filter down to all courses in that category too.
