Moodle is open source and free the only way anybody can make any money I suppose is by either adding features that people would shell out for or by knowing enough about how to setup and manage the moodle infrastructure and helping to keep the code base free.
In all respects Moodle source code can be a great catalyst for learning PHP at the very least.
