Firstly, there's Bernard's experimental linking of activities, see here for the latest version (though I don't know whether a lesson can be a percusor). Secondly, the lessons can give students grades, these may be enough of an incentive to get the students to look at the lessons before doing the quizzes (bonus marks?).
