Recent months have been a real education for me, as I have installed my first linux system and started operation my first server. During that time I had surprisingly few problems and everything seemed to work pretty smoothly. I have enjoyed this and learnt a great deal.
Given this success, I decided to bite the bullet and use this server for my classes this semester. However, a serious problem has cropped up just when classes have started. Please help me!
I am getting the infamous...
"Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 16777216 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 1484 bytes) in /var/www/html/myclass/lib/datalib.php on line 83"
...error. Now I know from the forums about the advice to change the settings of php.ini and also to delete modules. The problem is that I have done these things and there is little if any improvement.
Here is what I have done: changed the memory_limit values in php.ini from 8M to 16M and even higher. I have also deleted my test moodle on the same machine, deleted old courses from my production moodle, and even deleted a couple of modules I thought I wouldn't be needing. However, this problem is still occurring. It is intermittent but persistent.
Given these issues, I am scratching my head wondering what the problem is. The important thing to note is that it is not a bandwidth or traffic issue - students have not starting accessing my site yet, so there are only a handful of users, and the same errors occur on the server machine itself.
Could this possibly be a problem of some other more arcane php or system setting? Or is my system inadequate? I'm not running much software. My php version is 4.3.8.
Here is the output of a free command on my Fedora system:
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 513112 467632 45480 0 18052 230720
-/+ buffers/cache: 218860 294252

And from the /etc/sysconfig/hwconf file:
I would really appreciate some advice, tips, trouble shooting, interpretation, whatever. I am at the stage of feeling that I have been foolish to have made this decision, and that everything is going wrong at the worst time.
