Moodle upgrade 1.3.4->1.4 left stuck on variables page

Hi Folks,

I had a smooth 1.1 -> 1.3.4 upgrade last week, just in time for 1.4 smile

Just tried to upgrade from 1.3.4 to 1.4 stable, and ran into a snag.  After following the recommended upgrade steps (back it all up, move existing directory, untar, copy old config.php over), I logged in as admin and the configuration variables page was displayed.  Everything looked OK, so I clicked "Save Changes".  Got the "Your changes have been saved" page, and was then taken back to the variables page.  Logged out and back in, and was taken back to the variables pages.

Found entries like the following in syslog:

ERROR: Relation 'mdl_user' does not have attribute 'auth'
ERROR: value too long for type character varying(255)
ERROR: value too long for type character varying(255)

I'm using PostgreSQL 7.2 as my backend database, on Debian Linux 3.0 with apache 1.3, and PHP 4.1.2.

I've reverted back to 1.3.4 for the moment.  Does anyone have any insights into this one?

Thanks!
