How to assign courses and materials for personal learning

Please can someone point out how we go about assigning materials for personal learning and assignment to certain groups like classes. In our installation, we can only assign materials to year groups from SIMS.

The short answer is that you need to set your individual courses up in groups /classes  and then if you only want certain classes to have access to certain materials in those courses then you use the grouping function. If you do a search in the Moodle docs for groups and groupings this should help you.
