Survey anonymity

Survey anonymity

Is there a way to secure true anonymity for the survey option? As is, if only one student has done the survey, and the instructor can go and see who's done the survey, then the survey is not really anonymous.  Maybe there is an administrative control for this feature?  If so, where is it?

Hello,

Just talking about
anonymity , I found this article that compares paper and online surveys and they found that paper surveys score higher than the online ones. "The results of student ratings: The comparison between paper and online survey" by Te-Sheng Chang, 2003.

Read some of the conclusions:
"...It seems that most student felt the paper method afforded a lower degree of anonymity than the online method. One of possible reason is that students feel more secure and free to write the honest truth since they do not feel as though their instructor would find out what they had written about him/her. The other reason is that online survey was administered without any involvement of the instructor (Layne, DeCristoforo, & McGinty, 1999). Previous research related to electronic survey technology revealed that students who used the electronic method gave fewer socially desirable responses (Erdman, Klein, & Greist, 1983; Kiesler & Sproull; Martin & Nagao, 1989)".

So, If we can make sure that there is anonymity in the online survey, we are taking a step ahead.

Regards,

Gabriela
