Add comment/text box as a choice

Is there a way to create an area for the user to enter their own choice in a text box area of Choice?  I know that there are some other mods that do this, but are only used for students. I want to be able to use Choice simply because of the clean look of the output, and because Teachers and Students alike can select an answer.

Is this a change that would take place in lib.php?

this feature isn't currently available, but it's something that's been asked about before.. see MDL-3035 - I'd be keen to add it, but don't have the free-time to spend on it.
