I'm working in 1.9.2, and I can't get an initial page to appear in student wikis. What I'm after is simple, so I'm stumped.....I want each student to see a list of 10 questions when they open up their individual wiki page. I have the list of 10 questions, and I thought it would be a simple matter to "create an initial page", and designate the 10 question file as the initial page. But when I do, I get a blank screen....nothing on it whatsoever.
I know I'm missing something simple....but my brain is fried. Help, please!
Creating an Initial Page in a Student Wiki

I'm not sure that I can solve your problem, Jim, but I have done what you are trying to do before when creating a simple ePortfolio. I created the page in a Wiki, toggled to the html code and then copied and pasted this into a Word document. I saved this as Text Only and left off the extension (as the final wiki used this file name as the name of each student's wiki). I uploaded this into Files and then created the new Wiki, selecting this file to create the initial page. It worked for me.....

Re: Creating an Initial Page in a Student Wiki
Unfortunately, the current erfurtwiki (I assume that is what you are using, but if it is not you need to let us know that ASAP) is really not adequately documented and the fact that a new wiki has been adopted does not encourage investing time in the current one.
One of the sources of continuing confusion with respect to student wikis is that once the teacher creates the student wiki, and attempt to edit the wiki's first page will only impact the teacher's instance. Can't tell if this is what you are confronted with, but this is often the source of confusion.
As Kate suggests, there is a method that is, well, a bit obscured for creating student wikis that allows for multiple pages, but it also might help you to see the difference.
My initial thrashing about resulted in these posts: http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=8501&parent=472560
To be frank, one could put some additional time into detailing the extent to which the importation could employ html as opposed to wiki markup as nothing I have tried came through completely clean, but as I suggested above, reverse engineering these details when moodle uses an ancient version of this wiki and any original documentation may be difficult to find can be time intensive and of nominal benefit at this point......
nwiki was demod some time ago with a template feature which would incorporate all this prestadigitation in its gui..... unfortunately, I could not find that functionality in the versions offered for download and you will have to post to Ludo to discover whether this will be incorporated in Moodle 2. I asked about this but never did get a reply; it would be a great feature for teachers who want to use Moodle for journals etc.....

Re: Creating an Initial Page in a Student Wiki
We've run into that problem as well -- faculty can't edit a "student" wiki. We've had to use these 'not too intuitive' settings -- "group" wiki set to "no groups". There doesn't seem to be any way to edit wiki type once it's been set up...

Re: Creating an Initial Page in a Student Wiki
Hi Jim
you have probably solved or given up on this one, but I had a similar problem and eventually worked it out.
You do indeed set up an initial folder, with one or more of the pages that you would like the wiki to be pre-populated with in that folder. The files must be text format but they should have no file extension. You then upload them to wherever you need, create the wiki activity, select the specific file you want to start with. All pages created with the links in square brackets work because they point to files with identical names (e.g. [foo] will successfully create and link to a file called foo, but not one called foo.txt.
So obvious once I thought about it but at least it is here for anyone else searching on this problem.
Cheers
