Hi Helen,
I checked the forums but not sure if this issue was mentioned before. In K-12 system, instructors need to inform, missing as 0, omitted and excused as not graded. This information need to pass to the parent and to the administrator as an information, not as a grade(student could just flunked and get a 0, or he just did not take the exam and get a 0, instructors should be able to see and report this).
We tried to get dirty and hack the code, it is not hard to manipulate the drop down box but it leads to the core of the grading code as well as the database structure.
We tried to use the scales, but we could have only one zero and no grade not published to the grade book. Also when a student gets an omitted or excused, that assignment should be taken out of his grading aggregation, this one is tricky but needed for sure. This could have major impact on public school systems and their grade keeping system
