Doing it one student/one activity at a time is extremely time-consuming and not-intuitive. Please vote in tracker: http://tracker.moodle.org/browse/MDL-13889
This is also not a minor issue, so it would be nice to change a priority there.

Overall, 1.8 gradebook had solid design, so we should stick to it.
Just in case - questions that I am being asked about 1.8 include:
- how to provide a grade for non-moodle activity
- how to import my excel file into the gradebook
- how to give half points or points higher than 100
Almost no one is lost in the gradebook interface itself, or missing any major feature other than the ones above
