I'm setting up my gradebook in moodle. I use a simple "point system" (grade is based on points earned divided by possible pts). But, I also allow students to earn bonus points. I don't want the bonus points to be part of the possible points. So, for example, if so far we've had two 10 point quizzes, and a student earned grades of 8 and 7, but also got 1 bonus pt, the grade would be (8 + 7 + 1)/20 instead of (8+7+1)/21. The students bonus points are accrued throughout the semester, and, again, I don't want them to be part of the "denominator" when calculating the grade. There use to be an 'extra credit' box that I used, but it's not there. Do you know of anyway to set it up? If it's easier, I can come to one of the open help sessions, just thought you may know right away having more experience w/ 1.9 gradebook
(ONLY) When the "Sum of grades" aggregation strategy is used, a grade item can act as Extra credit for the category. This means that the grade item's maximum grade will not be added to the category total's maximum grade, but the item's grade will. Following is an example:
- Item 1 is graded 0-100
- Item 2 is graded 0-75
- Item 1 has the "Act as extra credit" checkbox ticked, Item 2 doesn't.
- Both items belong to Category 1, which has "Sum of grades" as its aggregation strategy
- Category 1's total will be graded 0-75
- A student gets graded 20 on Item 1 and 70 on Item 2
- The student's total for Category 1 will be 75/75 (20+70 = 90 but Item 1 only acts as extra credit, so it brings the total to its maximum)
So if I understand correctly, you can set up a category for your EC, choose the "sum of grades" aggregation method, then you would add EC items there and include this category in your overall course grade aggregation. Apparently, it's still not able to simply give more points than the total points possible (no giving 12/10 on an individual assignment, for example), but you can put in additional items in the EC category where you can put in the extra points. So if you had an Assignment #1 worth 10 points, you could also add an item in the EC category called Assignment #1 EC - and you could give EC there.
As I understand LSU has designed a gradebook that would allow simply giving more points than the total allowed, as well as a few other possibilities, but it's not part of the core Moodle gradebook at this point.
Overall course aggregation: sum of grades
Aggregate including sub-categories: checked Yes
Sub category set up: name: SUM EC
Aggregation: sum of grades
Aggregation coefficient: 20.000 ?
Added a manual item called "Assignment 1 EC" with maximum 20, minimum 0, grade to pass 0, Extra Credit box checked Yes
But when I got to Category total settings for the SUM EC category, the maximum/minimum grade is set to 0 and not changeable.
So even if I put the extra 20 points in the Assignment 1 EC column, the SUM EC category total stays at 0.
And I get nothing in the Course total, so it's not aggregating anything (even though I filled in grades for all the other assignments.
