As resources do not appear in the gradebook I'm unclear why the ID number field is useful. Any suggestions on how this might be used appreciated.
Well, idnumber for resources is probably the least useful example. However, it is more consisted for every type of thing you can add to a course to have the option of having an idnumber associated with it.
Here is a possible example. Suppose you want to write a course report to let you download the number of times each resource has been downloaded, and reconcile that information with some external database.
