Right now Category Totals are white. I would make them the same color as the color of the category, or some other shade, so visually people will see that Total is not just another item on the list.
And then, I would consider moving the dropdown below, into the row with category total, since this is where calculation occurs.

Good idea Elena. I considered doing this at an earlier stage, but it looked bizarre when the aggregation position is set to "First" in the course gradebook setting, and I really wanted the colour to delimit clearly the boundaries of the category. Right now I am using an extra row of empty coloured cells, which looks good but is not very good HTML markup (I'll probably get teased by someone about that), for accessibility reasons etc...
