Unlocking Grades.

I have a lot of grades that have become locked, I am not sure how they have become locked because we mark from the assignments pages.

I know that it is possible to go to the Gradebook and click individually on items that are overriden and unoverride them but this will take hours.

Does anyone know how I can make a global change to unoverride these grades that have become locked.

Kind Regards

Hi Natalie,

Assuming you have phpMyAdmin, you can reset all the overridden flags as follows:

Click the SQL tab, then in the "Run SQL query/queries on database moodle" field type

UPDATE mdl_grade_grades SET overridden = 0

and click the Go button.

Please note that it's always a good idea to make a backup of your database before trying any SQL queries. wink

If you think it would be helpful to have a setting within Moodle for resetting all overridden flags, please create an issue for it in the tracker.

PS To make a feature request (or report a bug) in the tracker, you'll first need to create an account, then login and follow the "Create new issue" link. Please see the tracker documentation for more details.

Re: Resetting all overridden flags

Is there anyway to just turn off the Overridden feature.
I am really disappointed that when you add "Quick Feedback" it now checks the "overriden" box. The way I like to use this feature is when I see a low grade I post some comments directing the students to correct or redo the assignment, etc...but if I put the comment in and the student retakes the assignment the new grade will not automatically show up and that defeats the purpose and time saving benefit of autograded assignments.

Also sometimes I put a 0 in place of a "-" so the grade will be averaged so the students can see the negative affect earning a 0 is having on their grade, thus hopefully motivating them to complete the assignment, but again unless I uncheck the override box for each student I can not do this.

I am teaching an intro to moodle course to 24 instructors and was excited to share the quick feedback feature to them, but I am thinking it is not worth using if it automatically enables the check on "overriden".

Any way to shut it off or other alternatives?

Thanks so much for your input!

Hi Debra,

You can turn off the overridden grades feature by preventing the capability to edit grades in the gradebook, in other words, only allow teachers to add grades and feedback from within assignments.

Good solution except for autograded assignments like "Lesson" , "Quizzes" etc....that do not allow you to add grades from within them. So if a student does not take a quiz, how do you add "0" to the quiz score from within the quiz module?

I have no solution, but I just had an eye-opener wide eyes since I am just testing 1.9 for now.

So, once an instructor uses quick feedback/grading in the Gradebook for an activity, there is no way for him to use Assignment/Quiz interface anymore for grading, and it is not possible to remove the overridden flag other that in the database?

I think both things can be useful:
- resetting overridden flags in bulk and
- possibility to turn-off the overridden feature in general

I'll be happy to add a ticket (I just hope that I got it right)

Yes, Yes please do submit a ticket on the following - you summarized it quite nicely!

- resetting overridden flags in bulk and
- possibility to turn-off the overridden feature in general

Elena, instructors can change a grade within an assignment after changing it in the gradebook by removing the overridden flag in the grader report. Please see the Grades FAQ for details.

Regarding bulk removal of overridden flags, you'll be pleased to hear we're hoping to add the LSU's grade item and student grades quick edit feature to the grader report (MDL-18229) as part of our Stage 2 gradebook improvements (see Development:Gradebook improvements).

Hi Helen,
I just noticed that when I went to untick he override box for an individual grade, that I had to switch editing (grades) off before moving on to uncheck the next grade (edit grades on again!) or the change would not be saved. Seems a bit long winded!

I am on Moodle 1.9.4 build 20090211

Debra, if you un-check the grade category setting "Aggregate only non-empty grades" then students who haven't taken a quiz will receive a grade of zero.

Re: Turning off the overridden grades feature

Yes I have done that but it would be really nice to give extra feedback without locking the grade to motivate the students to complete before the due date. Also, I hate for all students to have to have their empty grades count as 0's but this has been the best option for now. I was really excited about being able to add feedback in the gradebook but there is no way I can spend the time clicking the override check box twice and updating changes for every single student. I see this is fixed in 1.9.5 but would be nice for it to be fixed in 1.9.4 as I have no idea when 1.9.5 will be released and most likely we will not be able to properly test before our next school year as we have activity locking and it takes a long time for us to be able to upgrade. would be nice if some of the 1.9.5 gradebook improvements could be back ported to 1.9.4. Any chance of that. I am sure it is a lot harder than it sounds but I am just dreaming. If I could get some of the 1.9.5 gradebook improvements in 1.9.4 before faculty depart for the summer the dark cloud that hangs over moodle might be gone and hopefully their enthusism for using it will be renewed and I could work hard in the summer to get their courses/gradebooks lookin good.

This has been a really tough year due to this upgrade. My fault for upgrading to v1.9.5 without testing....I just never imagined the gradebook would be this challenging.

Thanks for all you are doing!!!!

I've seen this tip in several posts, but how/where do I turn it off?

... I'm using moodle 2.4, sorry!

UPDATE mdl_grade_grades SET overridden = 0

Is there a way to do this with Moodle 2.4?  It's such a pain if you accidently override a single grade and all 1000 students get overriden as well.

ANSWERED -

I'm using Bob Puffers awesome LAE Grader plugin for dealing with overrides.

This should still work in 2.4 - it has to be run on the database.
