Is there a way to hack the names of the main page headings (ie; "site news", "main menu")?

In other words, is there a way to name them something else?

You can change these settings within the language files (/moodle/lang/en for example).

Go to Administration » Configuration » Language » Compare and edit current language  and then change the strings to whatever you like.

If you want to avoid having your changes overwritten when you update, create your own language by copying the moodle/lang/en folder to something like moodle/lang/en_me and then edit that new language.

I opened moodle.php in lang/en_us.  I changed the following line "$string['sitenews'] = 'Site news';"  to  "$string['sitenews'] = 'School news';"   This did not work.thoughtful

Is your Moodle configuration set to use en_us or en? You may have changed the wrong file. Another possibility is that your browser is reading its cache and not the file directly. Check your configuration first and then clear your cache.
