You might want to check out my boss's book, *The Psychology of the Internet,* particularly her chapter on disinhibition, a situation created by the absence of F2F exchange in which people free to say much, much more in a much stronger way than they would in person.

I'm not plumping for the book, just saying that online discussions can be very liberating, but that's a double-edged sword.
