LAtex has been working fine up until today. We got the output below in a forum posting. Any ideas on the cause (or a solution)?

Hi Kevin,
Do you have an example of the working on how you get the factors of a cubic equations that have complex parts?

Answer:

X^3-x+10=0

Find the first root by trial and error

[x=-2] (-2)^3-(-2)+10=0

This is true so x=-2 is a root and x+2is a factor

Dividing X^3-x+10 by x+2 gives

X^2-2x+5=0

Now use the formula

\frac{1\pm\sqrt{(-1)^2-4\times1\times5}}{2\times1}

to get

x=1\pm2j

the remaining two roots

With a simple school mathematics -2 is not a root of $$x^3 - x + 10$$ because $$(-2)^3 - (-2) + 10 = -8 + 2 + 10 = 4 \not = 0 $$ ... and the only real root is somewhere near -2.31 wink

What's the main problem? Big letters in $$X^3$$ or the method of getting factors of a cubic equations that have complex parts?

( ... a correct numeric solution can be found for example with http://www.akiti.ca/Quad3Deg.html : real root is about

 -2.3089073197650927

and complex roots

1.1544536598825463 + 1.731557032975991 $$i$$ and

1.1544536598825463 - 1.731557032975991 $$i$$ ... )

Sorry folks. I copied and pasted some latex equations that were giving problems in our installation, which then displayed perfectly in moodle.org - I'm sure you were confused as my problem was with the display of the equations and not the actual mathematics. Thanks to those who pointed out the error in the math. Our host has sorted out the display issue.

Regards,

Brian
