Well, I located the database tables on my server, and I'm completely at sea here, afraid to touch anything. What am I looking at? What should I be doing with this stuff? It's the Sorcerer's Apprentice all over again 8-*

Most of Moodle seems designed so that I won't ever have to look at the database -- is that right? Is this access for when something goes horribly wrong? Should I be doing something here regularly? How do other people use it?

Birdie,

You are correct.  99% of the time you will not need to access your database directly.  However, that being said, it is always good to know how the engine works when you step on the gas and nothing happens.  Your database is the engine of your Moodle site.  Take sometime to read up on phpMyAdmin and your database (do a google search) and if you can (if it is not a production site) play around alittle.
