What version of Moodle is your backup file from?  What version of Moodle are you restoring to?  Have you had any successes in restoring any courses?

Things to check...

* You are not restoring to an older version of Moodle than the files where backup up with (not supported).
* The files did not come from a very old version of Moodle (massive version diffences can be problematic)
* Try with debugging switched on - Site Administration > Server > Debugging. You might get some errors displayed that help diagnose the problem.
* In the System Administration > Server > System Paths, set the zip and unzip paths at *both* ends. The built in PHP zip doesn't like large files for some reason.

And....

I don't think it helps much, but...

And, this bug report might be appropriate..

I don't understand what

There is a big course that I have had problems import=restoring on my SiteGround hosted site where I don't have the right to influence execution time. I'm wondering if this setting you mention (but that I don't understand- what "both ends"?) could help.

Or if there is anyway to manually do part of the process. I think I have tried unzipping through the server filemanager and that I believe worked, in spite of zip file size, but how does one get the unpacked folders "hooked up with Moodle"?

Go where I said and fill in the fields. If you get it right the ticks go green when you save the page. The usual paths are /usr/bin/zip, /usr/bin/unzip etc. This won't work if it's a Windows server of course.

By "both ends" I mean that you need these settings in both the Moodle that created the backup and the one restoring it (assuming they are different of course).

Backup requires a zip file. It may be nothing to do with the integrity of the zip file, but it's one thing worth a try.

The *really* important thing is to turn on debugging - this normally shows the exact nature of the problem. We're guessing otherwise.

did you try debug on?

some further hints, but first back up everything
  • normaly you may restore old one step by step through several versions.
  • try to delete the temp and backup dir in moodledata
  • delete the backupdir in moodle root and make a complete update
