In the HTML-editor of Moodle you:
1. type a text for linking a media object (we type a dot)
2. then put the focus on that dot
3. push the chain button
4. fill the fields of the popup-form (after spotting/browsing - or even uploading - your media file)
5. during runtime Moodle will choose the needed player, depending of the extension of your file)
I love this filter concept: several multimedia formats (.avi .wmv .mov .flv .swf .mpg), mindmaps, netlogo, jmol, Scratch, geogebra, cabri, algebra, tex, hiddentext, wikindx3), all with the same chain-button.
What else do you wish?
See the docs for multimedia filter for more details.
