I wish to install Moodle to open an online school. But I'm not sure if it's enough. How many user in total (logged-in and not) can this web server with these specs accommodate? How many online users all at once can it accommodate? I really have very limited knowledge about these part of Moodle. Though, I know my way around it when it's already installed. The hard part for me is installing and knowing the right specs for Moodle. Any help would be greatly appreciated! What else do I need to know that's very important?

By the way, the school is targetting at least 150 users in total and about 20 users online in a day. If it's not too much to ask, what are the web host specs that we need to accommodate this much users?

Thank you very much!

The biggest problem with that package is the 220 MB web space. That's very little and you're going to run out of space quite quickly - especially if you have lots of media rich content (lots of graphics, multi-media, etc.)

What is the name of the web host?

Be careful with the free web hosts. They tend to close shop on a regular basis and at the least convenient time for you.

Only a quick reference of what I installed 2 years ago:

  • HP Proliant DL380 G4
  • 2 Intel Xeon, 3.4GHz
  • System: 2 x 36 GB diks Mirrored
  • Data: 4 x 72 GB disks RAID 5
  • RAM: 8GB (50 concurrent users per GB according to Moodle installation docs)
  • SUSE SLES Server 10.x
  • users: 3'000-6'000
  • courses: 500-1'000
After two years of operation I reached:

  • users: 6'600
  • courses: 876
  • Data: 143GB used of 201GB, i.e. 76% used
  • mySQL database: 1.6GB on system Disk
Have a look at the according moodle installation docs. Data is what users (teachers and students) uploaded into the different moodle courses. DataBase is moodle's internal data and references to keep the whole logic working.

Hope it helps, Rosario

Hi Rolio,

My IT guys are having problems with IIS - Windows XP - PHP. I cannot get my PowerPoint presentations to run correctly. I keep getting IIS errors. Are you having those sort of problems?
