The fact is that grades and feedback are being recorded in the gradebook database tables since 1.9. This isn't going to change, and it's very good this way. The issue, as you point it out, is of usability and convenience. We need to make it convenient and useful for teachers to enter and present text feedback using the gradebook interface. Currently the tiny little input boxes in the grader report are far from adequate, and I've been working on an AJAX interface to improve this (it's been in CVS HEAD for a few months now).

Any extra ideas for improving feedback usability are welcome smile
