I only want to share this experience with you, just in case:
- our root-partition was filled with logs this noon in about 15 min. (reason unknown for the moment)
- as apache logs and mysql databases are there, apache refused further connections and mysql probably crashed despite my effort to gracefully shut it down
- after freeing the root-partition from unnecessary and astonishingly huge apache-logs I resumed normal operations
- after a while a student told me that posting into forums was not possible any more. After some tests I realized that not even the site Admin could post: internal error
- with phpMyAdmin I checked the tables for corruption and I found that the forum tables were crashed and corrupt
- I put Moodle in maintenance mode and restartet mysql to close all open tables
- I repaired them with the according function in phpMyAdmin
- after that, normal operation could be resumed
