Thanks to everyone who has responded with their suggestions and comments on their own practice. Clearly we work in a variety of different environments with varied requirements. In our case, for example, we are teaching an OO programming course for third-year physics undergraduates. Based on our experience in previous years we have found that it is very useful to our students to get feedback on their work promptly so that they can take it into account when working on the next module. The downside is that we cannot let students submit work for credit once the feedback has been published.

To third-year undergraduates one would hope that the concept of a deadline would be clear enough without having to actually block uploads, but this seems not to be the case. Perhaps next year we will go back to leaving submissions open anyway.

I still think the suggested functionality would make our life easier as we could simply look at Moodle for a complete list of work to be marked, whether submitted on time or late with a valid excuse.
