Hey Mark:
You should be able to place a .htaccess file into your moodle directory... it should look something like the lib/htaccess file from within the moodle sate... just remember to add the . in front of the name if you want to use the file.
There are also some settings you can change in /etc/php.ini and httpd.conf ... The htaccess file should help show you which ones they are...
