Hi
MySQL comes with a benchmark suite. See http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/mysql-benchmarks.html
FYI, an improvement in database performance may or may not affect the overall Moodle performance, depending on whether database is the bottleneck or not.
You've seen http://docs.moodle.org/en/Performance I guess. There are other pointers in the running discussion http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=102978
Benchmarking Moodle is a broad subject. See for example http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=103040 and the script "perspective" referred there http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=57028
