To add to Visvanath and Taylor's posts, check that you have a correctly indexed database, as this may be causing a database bottleneck. Go to Site Admin -> Miscellaneous -> XMLDB Editor -> Check Indexes. If there are any missing ones, the script will tell you about them and suggest SQL to run to correct the problem. You should also try the Check Biginits test to see if there is a problem there - just to make sure the database is as good as it can get.
