I run a fledgling business training site. Our users tend to be shy -- meaning, they don't want to log in, and they don't want to talk. They just want to look. In order to guage our success, and also to target subject matter for future course development, I came up with a couple of very primative hit counters that run against the log file. One counts guest users by IP address (yes, I know that's not very unique). The other counts what resources are popular views. Screen shot of one script attached.
This is very sloppy code, because I don't yet know where things are supposed to go in Moodle, and I haven't really integrated it properly. However, if anyone is interested, you can download the code from http://clinstats.com/moodlers/counters.zip. I would love to know if anybody improves on my maiden effort.
