While planning for disaster recover I was wondering...
When doing a full site restore should we restore all the folders in moodledata or just the numbered folders?

Thank you

Each of the numbered ones refers to a particular course. 1 is usually the site home page. So, you would want all of those unless you are willing to lose data files for a course.

You will want the user folder or you will lose their avatars and maybe more.

Keep the groups. It will have any group avitars at least and otherwise will take up no space.

If you have anything except utf_8 English, or your have customized any languages, you will want the lang folder. Might as well keep it in any case because it will be super small if there are not additions.

You probably don't need temp, session, or cache, but they really take up no space.

I would backup the whole folder.

The only time this folder gets really big (relative to the size of the courses' data) is when you have a lot of autogenerated backups (.zip files).

One other suggestion: Do a search on files larger than a certain size and sort by size to look for duplicates and see if big ones can be consolidated or deleted. That is perhaps the best way to keep the sizes small enough to make backups efficient.
