I am trying to figure out how to backup the course categories from one Moodle installation to another. Is this possible? I tried to backup the front page course, and use the front page restore, but the course categories were not included in the restore. I would appreciate any guidance.

sorry, but backups are done course by course.
If it's a whole Moodle site you want to move, you can perhaps have a look at the Moodle migration documentation...
