I'm struggling.  I've read the ldap authentication documentation and followed the instructions as best I can...

(created a user in Active Directory to act as bind user and filled in the information in Administration:Users:Authentication:LDAP server)

...but I'm not even getting any error messages from Moodle.The ldap server is Windows 2003 and I'm running moodle 1.8 on ubuntu.  I think I've got the LDAP extension installed - there is a section on it in php.ini.

Any help gratefully received.

Your phpinfo file seems to confirm that the LDAP extension is installed. You're not getting error msgs. I only have one question: What is the problem? Is no one able to login or what?
