Matthew - I went back and double checked and I think you will have no problem doing what you need in 1.8 with the advanced upload assignment type. If you are doing this frequently it may be worth learning a bit about how Moodle saves the assignments so that after scanning you can simply upload one zip file and unzip it and perhaps have all the student files there. Then you will have more time to enjoy your wine
