Assignments missing & cannot be edited - Upgraded from 1.5 - 1.9

We've just gone through an upgrade from 1.5.4 to 1.9.1. We did it version by version so seem to have taken all the right steps. We were just about to congratulate ourselves when, oh horror, one of our teachers discovered she can't get at her students submitted assignments.

The only assignments that are still working correctly are the Offline assignments. These can be viewed, seen in gradebook and on Assignment overview page and edited.

All other assignments are no longer working:

trying to view them gives a blank page (no error message)
trying to edit them gives a blank page (no error message)
can't view students' submitted files
they don't appear on the Assignments overview page

Has anyone encountered this as well? Would appreciate any help on this, pref before all the teachers come back from the term break in a week. thoughtful
