I still have some reservations about the scalability of the load on the database, (some caching may be necessary) but Mike's included a forum config variable to switch it off if big sites find it puts too much drag on their system.

I think there are a number of ways this can be improved in the code as well. Now that we have it as part of the base, I could see areas in the code where certain calls could be combined with information making some of the database calls less necessary. I will help in this area.
